T.C. actually has a really nice singing voice and will in fact lull any of the gang to sleep if need be (it's usually Brain)

Benny has THE squishiest face. And he will absolutely let people squish his face because it's very therapeutic.

Chooch tends to make himself little nests wherever he sleeps. He'll go to bed an hour early just so he can get a nest going and have it be perfectly comfy by the time he's tired enough to go sleep. He usually makes it out of whatever's lying around and then tosses an old blanket on top of it and kneads/circles around in it until it's perfectly Choo shaped

Spook is very much a tea guy. Nearly every day he makes himself a cup of tea and will make tea for anyone else who wants any (and also usually forces T.C. to have a cup when he's high-strung)

Fancy would never admit it but he loves being like aggressively patted like y'know when people will play the bongos on their cat yeah he goes crazy over that shit but he'd NEVER admit that

Y'know those videos of cats hole punching cardboard with their teefs? Yeah that's one of Brain's favorite pastime activities. Crumchin on cardboard. I love it when cats eat crunchy things and they do the little thing where their face scrunches up like yeah put some oomph into that cronch

Today's mix:

Ministry of Sound: Trance Nation: America Two by ATB / George Acosta 2001 Trance / Progressive Trance

Really wasn't fully captivated by either of these trance and progressive trance mixes from ATB and George Acosta that were issued as a double-disc exclusively in the US in '01 by the gargantuan superclub-label Ministry of Sound. Both have some pretty decent moments on them, but there are undoubtedly other mixes from around this same time period that're consistently better.

Some of the best parts of ATB's mix are, somewhat ironically I guess, two of the biggest commercial trance smashes of the turn-of-the-millennium era, in Safri Duo's "Played Alive (The Bongo Song)" and Ian van Dahl's worn-out vocal classic, "Castles in the Sky." But not too long after that, ATB loses me with his own cornily acidic remix of Nino Lopez Project's "Experience," and then fails to regain my interest thereafter.

George Acosta, on the other hand, gets his bangers out of the way pretty early on, with a sublime and euphoric five-song run that consists of Lexos' "The Key," a remix of Steve Morley's "Sacred City" by Shane aka Ronald van den Beuken, "Exhale" by System F aka Ferry Corsten, "Sun" by Slusnik Luna, and "Surreal" by Free Radical. And while "Exhale" and "Sun" were both huge especially, it doesn't appear that the other three made it onto too many other mixes during this time period, so in addition to sequencing the songs well, Acosta deserves some points for the originality in his selection on that whole leg too.

My main problem with his mix, overall, though, is that it feels a bit too inorganically forced after that. Being that we're dealing with an entity like Ministry of Sound here, we have to keep in mind that their DJs on these releases have to select the immense and shiny tunes that play at MoS' own clubs too; their main impetus for putting out DJ mixes like these, after all, is to get your ass into their clubs or to get your ass to their events. And that doesn't necessarily mean that the music's then bad, but it does seem to naturally open up an ample opportunity for commerce to take precedence over art, because while true music fans of pretty much any stripe are not too keen on their favorite genre(s) being commercially exploited, you gotta think that in order for MoS to make their money hand over fist like they do, they have to lean into that commercial aspect of the music in order to make it easier to draw more people to their sets. And it's fine if you like the music that results from that strategy (like I said before, I dig stuff like "Castles in the Sky" too), but a monumentally tall melody alone is not something that's ever going to wow me, personally—I'll always find it a bit hokey if you think you can just get away with a honking blare, and a lot of trance tracks, like the "Arome remix" of DJ Scot Project's "O (Overdrive)" that Acosta closes his set out with here, makes for a prime example. But that's the sound that ultimately sells and fills out the big, cavernous rooms that those songs were made for in the first place, so, I mean, what can you do? 🤷

In the end, Ministry of Sound only ever put out two releases in this Trance Nation: America subseries of theirs, and I'm not sure exactly why they stopped, but it seems they couldn't really figure out how to market trance to enough Americans via DJ mixes in order to make the venture worthwhile. Seems like in other music arenas, such as pop, execs have decent ideas of what Americans typically like and what different sectors of Europe like, but when it came to trance more specifically, Ministry of Sound couldn't figure out a way to really crack the code Stateside. But maybe they didn't even really try too hard in the first place and tried to sell these two discs to Americans just because. Either way, I wouldn't really recommend either of them, despite both of them having some merits.

Do you have any pets?: Yes !!! I currently have 2 dogs ( a corgi mix named Ein ((from Cowboy Bebop)) and a rat terrier named Luna but we call her Lulu), 3 cats (a black cat named Boo Boo ((she’s my soul cat <3)), a tabby named Stormy, and a tuxedo cat named Mitski). And my mom has my other dog with her back home, a pitbull mix named Bailey but he doesn't do well around other dogs and she lives alone so she kept him, and she has my (very very very old I don't know how he's still alive) parakeet named Bongo. This year I lost 3 fur babies :( my maine coon named Lily, she was very old and it was her time, my other tuxedo cat Squid, she had a mummified fetus that we found out about too late, and my ferret Jedidiah, he was old and had cancer. It’s been a hard year but I am grateful for my babies and the time I get to spend with them <3 I love love love animals and I've had so many fur babies, I've had cats, dogs, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, a rabbit, chameleons, a hedgehog, and a duck

Annon-Guy: I know you genuinely like most if every character possible, but are their certain characters you hate or don't seem to care about? For example, say that in Borderlands, there are people who love Claptrap, but you hate him for instance. Not saying you do (if you like him, I apologize. I was using that as an example).

In my storied experience with characters I like… or don't like as much.

There's mature and immature ways of handling it.

On a regular basis, especially in fighting games in particular, you're going to come across characters that don't always appeal to you.

For me, one of those characters WAS Platinum=the=Trinity in the BlazBlue franchise.

--Off-putting character personality, check. --Overly cutesie design, check. --Insults the protagonist of the story every chance she gets, CHECK.

And that's JUST for starters.

I RELISHED in the idea of using Ragna's "Devoured by Darkness" to suck the SOUL out of Platinum in matches every time I had the opportunity…

Is that Petty? YES. Very much so!

BUT!

I realised over time that Platinum has her appeal to various players, even from both Sena and Luna's perspectives… not to mention the plot related to the mysterious character named "Bell" in the Manga.

Platinum also references various Magical Girl anime shows to boot… so she is a reference to many things that are more than worthwhile than simply the character alone might allude to!

I may not be a fan of Platinum per se… but I AM a fan of Sailor Moon… and I AM a fan of Platinum's voice actor who plays a certain heroine in SYMPHOGEAR.

Playing a parody of a Magical Girl versus the real deal… it's only proof that the voice actress herself HAS RANGE.

Even if a character has some elements that annoy you or aggrivate you, or you just don't like what they look like… there are STILL some elements that can be engaging!

Another example is May… of Guilty Gear!

At first glance many people may think May sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the cast.

But if you look a bit closer, May's appeal is aimed towards players who may not necessarily find a game like Guilty Gear as appealing as they might want.

May is a character aimed at a demographic of people who don't always play fighting games… and that's the absolute TRUTH.

But even if such people exist, and even if they don't normally play a game like GG… May's existence alone changes all that.

It means that even people who enjoy cute things can play a rough and dangerous game like Guilty Gear!

And it's all in good fun.

Same goes for Bridget, same goes for Izuna, for Dr. Paradigm, for any character that only appeals to "some type" of player.

It's all done with those players in mind… so they can connect to this game on SOME level.

I have things I like, and things I don't like… but for the things I don't like, I am reminded frequently that those elements of my individuality aren't as important as the ability to connect with people I meet on a regular basis.

Even for cute girls who play meme bongo drums in Under Night In-Birth… everybody has some level of fun with those characters.

Even for a cute innocent girl and her broken shattered monster-bed (Delilah and Bedframe)… there is SOME appeal!
